FAQs

Are these snips suitable for stainless steel?

These snips are designed for standard sheet metal; they should only be used on thin-gauge material and are not recommended for thick stainless steel.

Can I use these for curved cuts?

While the 8-inch size offers some maneuverability, they are engineered specifically for straight cuts; using them for tight curves may damage the blades.

How do I sharpen the blades?

It is recommended to use a fine diamond file to lightly hone the edges, ensuring you maintain the original blade angle.

Is there a locking mechanism?

Most aviation snips include a latch to keep the jaws closed; check the handle area for a secure latching tab.

What is the maximum thickness these can cut?

These are intended for thin-gauge sheet metal, typically up to 24-26 gauge steel.

Troubleshooting

Snips are having trouble completing a cut

Ensure you are using the full length of the blade and that the material thickness is within the tool's capacity.

Blades feel stiff or difficult to open

Apply a small amount of lubricant to the center bolt and pivot point to restore smooth motion.

Pros and Cons

Pros

High-leverage action reduces physical strain
Compact 8-inch size allows for excellent maneuverability
Delivers clean, precise straight cuts
Suitable for both professional and home projects
Robust construction for long-term reliability

Cons

Not intended for heavy-duty industrial gauge metal
Straight-cut design is limited for complex curved shapes
Smaller size provides less torque than 10 or 12-inch versions

Setup, Compatibility & Care

These snips do not require assembly and are ready for use immediately upon unboxing. To ensure long-term performance and edge retention:

Maintenance: Periodically wipe the blades with a light machine oil to prevent rust and ensure smooth operation of the pivot point.
Storage: Store in a clean, dry toolbox to protect the cutting edges from damage against other hard tools.
Cleaning: Use a dry cloth to remove metal shavings after every use; avoid using water, which can lead to oxidation.
Limitation: Do not attempt to cut through heavy-gauge metal or hardened steel, as this will prematurely dull or damage the precision edges.
