Setup, Compatibility & Care
Setup:
- Chitting (Recommended): Place the seed potatoes in a light, frost-free spot (like an egg box) for 2-3 weeks before planting. Look for short, sturdy, green sprouts.
- Prepare Grow Sacks: Ensure the 50L grow sacks are clean and placed on a level surface.
- Add Soil & Potatoes: Fill each sack with about one-third of its capacity with good quality compost or soil. Place 3-4 seed potatoes (depending on size) on top of the soil, sprout-side up. For larger tubers, you may wish to cut them into smaller pieces, ensuring each piece has at least one 'eye' or sprout.
- Add Fertiliser: Mix the provided potato fertiliser into the soil as per the fertiliser's instructions, ensuring it is incorporated around the seed potatoes.
- Cover: Add more soil to cover the potatoes, leaving a few inches at the top of the sack.
- Water: Water the soil gently.
Compatibility:
This kit is designed for outdoor growing in containers. The grow sacks are compatible with most standard potting mixes and garden soils. Ensure the location receives adequate sunlight (at least 6 hours per day).
Care:
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Check regularly, especially in warm or windy conditions, as grow sacks can dry out quickly.
- Earthing Up: As the potato plants grow, add more soil or compost to the sacks, covering the stems. This encourages more tubers to form and prevents them from being exposed to sunlight, which can turn them green and inedible.
- Feeding: Follow the instructions on the potato fertiliser for any additional feeding requirements.
- Harvesting: Harvest when the foliage begins to yellow and die back, typically 10-12 weeks after planting. Gently empty the grow sacks to retrieve the potatoes.
