Product Information

Full details

This guide is for home gardeners looking to grow a versatile herb for both its seeds and fresh leaves. The key benefit is its quick growth and dual-purpose use in cooking. A potential caveat is its tendency to bolt (go to flower) quickly if not kept watered. This product provides 150 seeds of annual coriander, a plant known for its aromatic seeds used in baking and savory dishes, and its fresh leaves (cilantro) ideal for curries, sauces, and salads. It's easy to grow and suitable for various garden settings.

FAQs

How long does it take for coriander seeds to grow?

Germination typically takes 1-3 weeks. Seedlings can be ready for harvesting as young leaves (cilantro) within 4-6 weeks of sowing, and seeds will mature later in the season.

Can I grow coriander indoors?

Yes, coriander can be grown indoors in pots, provided it receives plenty of light (at least 6 hours daily) and consistent moisture. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.

What is the difference between coriander and cilantro?

Cilantro refers to the fresh leaves and stems of the Coriandrum sativum plant, while coriander refers to the dried seeds. In some regions, 'coriander' may refer to the whole plant.

How often should I water coriander?

Coriander prefers consistently moist soil. Water regularly, especially during dry periods, but avoid waterlogging the soil. Check the soil moisture by feeling it with your finger.

Can I eat coriander flowers?

Yes, coriander flowers are edible and have a delicate flavor similar to the leaves. They can be used as a garnish.

What conditions promote seed production versus leaf production?

For leaf production (cilantro), remove flower stalks as they appear and ensure consistent watering. For seed production, allow the plant to flower and mature fully.

How many seeds are in a packet?

Each packet contains approximately 150 coriander seeds.

Troubleshooting

Coriander bolts (goes to flower) too quickly.

Ensure consistent watering. Avoid letting the soil dry out, especially during hot weather. Try sowing in a location with some afternoon shade.

Seeds are not germinating.

Ensure seeds are sown at the correct depth (1cm) in moist, well-drained soil. Check that the temperature is suitable for germination (typically above 10°C).

Leaves are yellowing.

Yellowing leaves can indicate overwatering or poor drainage. Ensure the soil is well-drained. Reduce watering frequency if the soil remains constantly soggy.

Slow leaf growth.

Ensure the plant is receiving adequate sunlight (full sun to semi-shade) and nutrients from fertile soil. Regular watering also supports growth.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Provides both seeds and fresh leaves for diverse culinary uses.
  • Fast-growing, allowing for multiple harvests throughout the season.
  • Easy cultivation suitable for gardeners of all skill levels.
  • Compact size makes it ideal for container gardening or smaller plots.
  • Aromatic seeds and leaves add unique flavor to a wide range of dishes.

Cons

  • Can bolt (go to seed) quickly, especially in hot or dry conditions.
  • Requires regular watering to maintain leaf quality and prolong harvest.
  • May need protection (e.g., cloche) for successful winter foliage production.
  • Seed yield and leaf quality can vary based on growing conditions.
  • Annual plant, meaning it completes its life cycle in one year.

Setup, Compatibility & Care

Sowing Indoors/Outdoors:

Direct sow seeds outdoors from April to July. Ensure the soil is light, well-drained, and fertile, raked to a fine tilth.

Positioning:

Choose a position in full sun or semi-shade.

Sowing Depth & Spacing:

Sow seeds thinly at a depth of 1cm (1/2") in rows spaced 30cm (12") apart.

Thinning:

Once seedlings are large enough to handle, thin them to stand 23cm (9") apart.

Watering:

Keep the soil consistently moist. Coriander plants can quickly bolt (go to flower) if they dry out.

Maintenance:

When growing for leaves, regularly remove any flowering stems that appear to prolong leaf production.

Winter Care:

For late summer sowings intended for winter use, provide cloche protection and ensure ample light for quality foliage.

Compatibility:

Suitable for patios, kitchen gardens, and cottage gardens. Can be grown in containers if adequate drainage and moisture are provided.

Care:

Easy for all levels of experience. The main care point is consistent watering to prevent bolting.
