Runner Bean Scarlet Emperor (Phaseolus vulgaris): Sow Indoors: April- May. Sow Outdoors: May- June. Row Width: 12" / 30cm. Harvest: July onwards. This variety is renowned for its heavy crops and being an excellent source of vitamins. It produces dark green, long, smooth pods with a wonderful taste. A popular early variety, it produces heavy crops of large pods with an excellent flavour and also makes an attractive addition to your garden. Indoor Planting: Sow seeds 3cm deep in trays or pots of moist compost, store in a warm place at an approx. temperature of 16°c (60°f). Growing On: When seedlings are strong enough, plant them out 12" (30cm) apart after hardening off. Outdoor Planting: Sow seeds 3cm deep direct in growing beds in rows 12" (30cm) apart, with 6" (15cm) between seeds. Keep soil moist. The beans will need support as they grow (netting or canes are ideal). Pick pods regularly to extend the harvest period. Runner Beans require well-cultivated, water-retaining soil and should be planted in a sheltered area, protected from late frosts.
