FAQs

Can I use this brush for drybrushing?

It is not recommended. Drybrushing is very abrasive and will quickly damage the synthetic fibers of this layering brush.

Is this brush suitable for oil paints?

The brush is designed for acrylics, but synthetic fibers are generally resistant to oils. However, you must use proper solvents for cleaning which may wear the brush faster.

Does this brush lose hair like natural brushes?

Synthetic STC fibers are securely anchored, significantly reducing the likelihood of shedding compared to cheaper natural hair brushes.

How do I know if I need a different size?

Use this Medium brush for general tasks. If you are painting eyes or fine text, a smaller 'S' or 'XS' brush would be more appropriate.

Can I use this with enamels?

While the bristles can handle it, enamels often require harsh thinners that can degrade the adhesive in the ferrule over time.

Troubleshooting

Bristles are splaying or losing their point

Wash the brush thoroughly with brush soap to remove hidden paint residue, then reshape and allow to dry completely.

Paint is drying in the base of the bristles

Soak the brush in a dedicated brush cleaner or warm soapy water for 10 minutes, then gently comb the paint out.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Resilient synthetic bristles resist curling and fraying
  • Versatile medium size covers most painting needs
  • Excellent balance and weight for long painting sessions
  • Perfectly compatible with all Citadel acrylic paints

Cons

  • Synthetic fibers may feel different than traditional sable
  • Single size option might not replace very fine detail brushes
  • Requires diligent cleaning to prevent paint buildup in the ferrule

Setup, Compatibility & Care

To keep your brush in top condition, avoid dipping the brush into paint up to the ferrule (the metal part), as dried paint here will force the bristles apart and ruin the point. When using the brush, rinse it frequently in clean water to prevent paint from drying on the fibers.

After your painting session, wash the brush gently with lukewarm water and a mild soap. Reshape the bristles into a point while damp and store the brush vertically with the bristles facing upward, or horizontally. Do not leave the brush standing in your water cup, as this will permanently bend the bristles.
