What should I use as a backing when punching?

Troubleshooting

Punching is difficult or requires excessive force.

Ensure the punch is perpendicular to the material. Use a rubber mallet or hammer to apply force. If the material is too thick or hard, consider using a different tool.

Holes are not clean or have jagged edges.

Make sure the punch is sharp and in good condition. Use a cutting mat or solid base. For leather, consider wetting the material slightly before punching.

Punches are rusting.

Clean and dry the punches after each use. Store them in a dry environment. Consider applying a light coat of oil to prevent rust.
