FAQs

Do I need to add a separate liner?

No, the Smart Garden Rattan Hanging Basket comes fully lined and is ready to fill with compost and plants directly.

What is the compost capacity of the 12-inch basket?

The 12-inch basket holds approximately 4.5 Litres of compost.

Can this basket be used indoors?

While designed for outdoor use, it can be used indoors if placed on a suitable drip tray to protect surfaces from moisture.

How long will the rattan last outdoors?

The rattan is tough and durable for outdoor use. Longevity depends on environmental conditions, but regular care can help maintain its appearance and integrity.

Are there other sizes available?

Yes, this model is also available in 14-inch and 16-inch sizes.

How should I clean the basket?

Use a soft brush for loose debris or a damp cloth for cleaning. Avoid harsh chemicals.

Troubleshooting

Basket appears dry quickly

Ensure the integrated liner is intact and not compromised. Water plants thoroughly and consider adding moisture-retaining crystals to the compost.

Rattan fibers fraying

Gently trim any loose fibers with clean scissors. Apply a small amount of natural oil (like linseed oil) to the affected area to help seal it, testing on an inconspicuous spot first.

Weight of the basket is a concern

Use a lighter, peat-free compost mix. Ensure the hanging support is rated for a higher weight capacity than you anticipate needing.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Convenient all-in-one design with integrated liner.
  • Durable construction built to last outdoors.
  • Attractive natural rattan aesthetic.
  • Sufficient capacity for most common hanging plants.

Cons

  • Fixed size; not available in custom dimensions.
  • Rattan may require occasional maintenance to preserve appearance.
  • Can be heavier once filled with compost and water.

Setup, Compatibility & Care

Setup:

  1. Ensure the basket is dry.
  2. Place the basket in its desired hanging location using a strong, secure hook or bracket.
  3. Fill the integrated liner with your preferred potting compost, leaving adequate space at the top for watering.
  4. Plant your chosen flowers, herbs, or trailing plants.
  5. Water thoroughly after planting.

Compatibility:

  • Compatible with most standard compost mixes.
  • Suitable for a wide range of flowering plants, herbs, and small decorative plants.
  • Requires a secure hanging mechanism capable of supporting the weight of the basket, compost, plant, and water.

Care:

  • To clean, gently brush away loose soil or debris with a soft brush. For more thorough cleaning, use a damp cloth.
  • Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, which can damage the rattan.
  • While durable, prolonged exposure to extreme weather conditions may shorten the lifespan of the rattan. Consider bringing indoors during harsh winters.
  • Ensure good drainage by not over-compacting the compost.
