Full details
The Dianthus caryophyllus 'Oscar Carnation' is an ideal choice for gardeners looking for a low-maintenance, fragrant addition to patio pots, borders, or window boxes. This compact variety is prized for its ruffled blooms, sweet clove-like scent, and pollinator-friendly nectar, offering a long season of color from late spring through summer. While it provides excellent value for small spaces and fresh floral arrangements, potential growers should note that it requires a sunny, well-drained spot to thrive and will struggle in overly wet or shaded conditions.

FAQs
Are these plants safe for pets?
Dianthus species can be mildly toxic to dogs and cats if ingested, so it is best to place them out of reach of curious pets.
How often should I fertilize them?
Apply a balanced fertilizer once every 3 to 4 weeks during the active growing season to encourage continuous blooms.
Can I grow them in a window box?
Yes, their compact, bushy habit makes them an excellent choice for window boxes, provided they receive sufficient sunlight.
Do I need to deadhead them?
Yes, regular deadheading is recommended to keep the plant tidy and to stimulate the production of new flower buds.
How much water do they need?
They prefer moist but well-drained soil. Water deeply when the top layer of soil feels dry to the touch, but avoid keeping the roots soaked.
Will they come back every year?
While often grown as bedding, Dianthus are perennial by nature; with proper care and protection from severe frost or winter wetness, they can return.
Troubleshooting
Flowers are wilting prematurely
Check soil moisture levels; the plant likely needs a deep watering if the top inch of soil is dry.
Poor flowering performance
Ensure the plant is receiving adequate sunlight and apply a bloom-boosting fertilizer.
Yellowing leaves
This is often a sign of overwatering or poor drainage; check for waterlogged soil and adjust your watering schedule.

Setup, Compatibility & Care
To ensure your plants establish well, choose a location that receives at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight daily. If planting in the ground, amend heavy soil with grit or sand to improve drainage. For container gardening, use a potting mix designed for bedding plants.
- Watering: Water consistently during dry spells, aiming for the base of the plant to keep the foliage dry.
- Feeding: Use a balanced liquid fertilizer occasionally during the growing season to support prolific flowering.
- Maintenance: Deadhead by pinching or cutting off faded flowers just above the next leaf node to encourage new growth.
- Winter Care: In colder climates, ensure the soil remains well-drained to protect the roots from winter wetness.
