Setup, Compatibility & Care
Sowing: Sow seeds either February to March indoors or September to October outdoors. For indoor sowing, use a good, free-draining, damp seed compost. Surface sow and cover very lightly with compost or vermiculite. Germination occurs best in a propagator or sealed container at 15-20°C (59-68°F). Do not exclude light, as it aids germination. For late summer sowing, use a cool greenhouse and overwinter plants in cool, well-lit conditions for larger plants the following spring, especially recommended for heavy or poorly drained soils.
Transplanting: Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into trays or 7.5cm (3in) pots. Grow them on in cooler conditions for 10-15 days before planting outdoors.
Planting Out: Plant outdoors after all risk of frost has passed. Space plants at least 45cm (18in) apart, and ideally 60cm (24in) apart to ensure good air circulation and help prevent fungal diseases like hollyhock rust.
Position: Choose a sunny border with fertile, well-drained soil. A position sheltered from strong winds is crucial to prevent the tall stems from breaking.
Care: Water regularly, especially during dry periods. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage further blooming. Consider staking taller plants if they are in an exposed location. Ensure good air circulation around the plants.
