Setup, Compatibility & Care
Sowing Seeds:
- Sow seeds in late winter to mid-spring indoors.
- Use a good quality seed compost and maintain a temperature of 24°C (75°F).
- Sow seeds on the surface of the compost and gently firm them down.
- Do not cover the seeds completely, as they require light to germinate. Sealing the sown tray in a polythene bag can help maintain humidity.
- Germination typically occurs within 7-15 days.
Transplanting and Growing On:
- Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots.
- Grow them on in cooler conditions.
- Before planting outdoors, gradually acclimatize the seedlings to outdoor conditions over 10-15 days.
Planting Out:
- Plant out after all risks of frost have passed.
- Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil.
- Space plants approximately 30cm (12in) apart.
Care:
- Position: Full sun is essential for best flowering and growth.
- Soil: Well-drained soil is crucial to prevent waterlogging.
- Watering: Water regularly, especially during dry spells, but avoid overwatering.
- Harvesting for Drying: Harvest when foliage is dry and flowers are fully open. Tie into small bunches and hang upside down in a dry, well-ventilated area until completely dry.
