Setup, Compatibility & Care
Planting: Choose a location that receives full sun to partial shade. The soil should be well-drained, with a preference for a slightly acidic pH.
Support: As the plant grows, its sturdy stems may require support. Stake plants with bamboo canes in early spring before the flower spikes emerge to prevent wind damage.
Watering: Water regularly, especially during dry periods, ensuring the soil does not become waterlogged.
Protection: Protect young plants from slugs and snails using appropriate deterrents.
Deadheading: Regularly remove faded flower spikes. This encourages the plant to produce a second flush of blooms, extending the flowering season.
Pruning: After flowering, you can cut back the plant to encourage tidier growth and potentially a repeat bloom. In autumn, cut back dead foliage.
Potting: If planting in a pot, use a good quality, well-draining compost. Ensure the pot has drainage holes.
Overwintering: In colder climates, mulch around the base of the plant in late autumn to protect the roots.
