Setup, Compatibility & Care
To begin, ensure you have an 8.5mm drill bit and a suitable power drill. Select hardwood logs roughly 50cm in length and 10-20cm in diameter. Species like alder, cherry, and chestnut are ideal, while conifers and sycamore should be strictly avoided as they inhibit mycelium growth. After inoculation, place your logs in a shaded, sheltered outdoor area, ideally off the ground. Periodically check the logs during dry spells to ensure they retain some moisture, but do not submerge them. Patience is key, as the mycelium needs time to colonize the wood thoroughly before the first fruiting body appears.
