Full details
The Digitalis Tall Collection from Marshalls Garden is designed for gardeners seeking to add elegant height and timeless charm to their borders, particularly those favouring a cottage-style aesthetic. Its key benefit is the introduction of graceful spires of bell-shaped flowers, attracting beneficial pollinators. A potential caveat is that foxgloves prefer well-drained soil and may not thrive in waterlogged conditions. This collection features three complementary Digitalis varieties, offering vertical interest and a natural, informal look to garden designs.

FAQs
Are foxgloves perennial or biennial?
Foxgloves are typically biennial or short-lived perennials. They usually flower in their second year and may then die back, but often self-seed to provide new plants for subsequent years.
What is the best time to plant these plug plants?
Plug plants are best potted on and grown in a sheltered location until the risk of frost has passed, then planted out in late spring or early summer.
Are these plants safe for gardens with pets and children?
Foxgloves are toxic if ingested. It is advisable to plant them in areas inaccessible to pets and small children, or to supervise them closely in the garden.
How much sun do Digitalis plants need?
They perform best in full sun to light shade. Too much deep shade can result in leggy growth and fewer flowers.
Can I grow these in containers?
Yes, Digitalis can be grown in large containers, provided they have good drainage and are kept consistently moist but not waterlogged.
What does 'jumbo plug plant' mean?
A jumbo plug plant is a larger-sized seedling than a standard plug, offering a more robust root system and faster establishment in the garden.
Troubleshooting
Plants are not growing tall.
Ensure the plants are receiving adequate sunlight and are planted in well-drained soil. Over-fertilizing can sometimes lead to lush foliage but reduced flowering height.
Leaves have yellowing or brown spots.
This could indicate overwatering or poor drainage. Check soil moisture levels and improve drainage if necessary. Ensure good air circulation around the plants.
Pest infestation (e.g., slugs, aphids).
Handpick slugs and snails or use appropriate organic deterrents. Blast aphids off with a jet of water or use insecticidal soap if infestation is severe.
Plants are flopping over.
Tall foxgloves may benefit from staking, especially in windy locations. Insert stakes discreetly early in the season to avoid root disturbance.

Setup, Compatibility & Care
Setup:
Upon receiving your jumbo plug plants, it is recommended to pot them on into larger pots with good quality compost. Allow them to establish in a protected environment (like a greenhouse or cold frame) for a few weeks before planting them out into their final positions.
Compatibility:
- Soil: Thrives in well-drained soil. Amend heavy clay soils with organic matter to improve drainage.
- Light: Prefers full sun to light shade. Avoid deep shade.
- Companions: Pairs well with lower-growing border plants, ferns, and ornamental grasses.
Care:
- Watering: Water regularly, especially during dry periods, ensuring the soil does not become waterlogged.
- Feeding: Feed sparingly with a balanced liquid fertilizer during the growing season, but avoid over-fertilizing.
- Deadheading: While not essential, removing spent flower spikes can encourage a second, smaller flush of blooms or prevent unwanted self-seeding.
- Pest & Disease: Generally robust, but watch for slugs and snails, especially when plants are young. Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal issues.
