Chives (Allium schoenoprasum) are a popular herb known for their mild, oniony flavor, making them a versatile addition to various dishes like omelettes and soups. They also add beauty to the garden with their lovely edible pink flowers. Chives are easy to grow, requiring moist soil and occasional trimming of faded leaves or flowers. They can be sown indoors all year round or outdoors from March to April. For indoor planting, sow seeds 0.5cm deep in moist compost, keeping them in a warm place (13-16°C). Once seedlings are strong, transplant them into larger pots or trays, ensuring they have adequate light and space. Harden off before transplanting outdoors after the last frost. For outdoor planting, sow seeds 1.5cm deep directly into the growing bed, keeping the soil moist. Thin seedlings to 15cm apart and pick leaves as needed. For a year-round supply, sow indoors in pots.
