Product Information

Full details

The PolyX Fixing Buttons are essential accessories for DIYers and contractors installing polycarbonate roofing, providing a secure method to anchor large sheets directly into timber rafters. These buttons excel at distributing pressure evenly to prevent damage to the sheet while creating a watertight seal to stop moisture ingress; however, they require pre-drilling the polycarbonate to allow for expansion and contraction, which users must keep in mind to avoid cracking.

FAQs

Are these buttons suitable for metal rafters?

No, these buttons are specifically engineered for timber rafters.

How many buttons come in a pack?

This pack contains 10 individual fixing button assemblies.

Do I need to buy screws separately?

No, each PolyX button assembly comes with the necessary screw and cap included.

Can these be used with corrugated sheets?

These are primarily designed for flat or multi-wall polycarbonate sheets to ensure the circular housing can create a flat seal.

Do these buttons help with thermal expansion?

They help secure the sheet, but you must ensure you have pre-drilled an oversized hole in the polycarbonate to allow for that expansion.

Troubleshooting

Polycarbonate sheet cracking near the button

The hole was likely drilled too small. Always drill a hole larger than the screw shank to allow for thermal movement.

Water leaking through the fixing point

Ensure the rubber washer or housing is sitting flush against the sheet. Do not overtighten, as this can deform the seal.

Screw failing to grip the timber

Ensure the screw is entering the center of the timber rafter. If the wood is too soft or damaged, move the fixing point slightly.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Ensures a reliable watertight seal for roof installations
Distributes pressure to protect the structural integrity of polycarbonate
Prevents long-term sheet slippage on rafters
Simple assembly with included screws and caps
Professional, clean finish for exterior projects

Cons

Requires precise pre-drilling of polycarbonate sheets
Not suitable for use on metal framing
Limited to specific sheet thicknesses suited for the 10mm housing

Setup, Compatibility & Care

Pre-Drilling: Always drill a hole through the polycarbonate that is 2-3mm larger than the screw shank to accommodate thermal expansion.
Alignment: Ensure your rafters are aligned before fixing to maintain consistent spacing and load distribution.
Application: Place the button over the pre-drilled hole and drive the screw directly into the center of the timber rafter.
Finalization: Snap the decorative cap into place once the screw is secure for a finished look and secondary weather protection.
Maintenance: Periodically check the buttons after extreme weather events to ensure that no screws have loosened due to structural vibration or extreme wind loading.
