It is specifically designed for use on an unvented system to control the incoming water supply to a hot water cylinder. It includes a ‘droptight’ pressure reducing valve, meaning the valve will hold at the pre-set pressure regardless of whether under flow or no flow conditions and regardless of fluctuating inlet pressures. It also incorporates a single check valve which will protect the system against backflow prevention up to fluid category 2, and a pre-set expansion relief valve which will prevent over-pressurisation. The expansion relief valve is designed so it can rotate, to allow the discharge connection to be fitted in various directions, making installation easier. A connection for a balanced cold water take-off allows the user to connect a cold water feed direct from the inlet control valve. FAQs
What is an 'unvented' system?
An unvented system is a hot water system where the hot water cylinder is not open to atmospheric pressure. It is supplied directly from the mains cold water system and relies on safety devices like pressure reducers and expansion relief valves to operate safely.
Can this valve be used on a standard vented system?
No, this Multibloc valve is specifically designed and approved for unvented hot water systems only. Using it on a vented system would be incorrect and could compromise system safety.
What does WRAS Approved mean?
WRAS (Water Regulations Advisory Scheme) Approval signifies that the product has been inspected and tested to ensure it complies with strict water quality, safety, and plumbing regulations in the UK.
How do I set the pressure reducing valve?
This valve features a pre-set 3.0 bar pressure reducing cartridge. For standard installations, no adjustment is typically needed. If adjustment is required, consult the product manual or a qualified installer, as incorrect settings can affect system performance and safety.
What is the maximum pressure the expansion relief valve can handle?
The pre-set expansion relief valve is set to activate and relieve pressure at 4.5 bar.
What size is the discharge connection on the expansion relief valve?
The discharge connection for the expansion relief valve is 15mm.
Can I install this myself?
Installation of unvented hot water systems and their components requires specific knowledge and qualifications due to safety regulations. It is strongly recommended that installation is carried out by a qualified and registered installer.
Troubleshooting
Low or inconsistent water pressure at outlets
Check the pressure reducing valve setting. Ensure the inlet pressure is sufficient. Clean the integral strainer for potential blockages.
Water leaking from the valve body
Ensure all connections are securely tightened. If leakage persists from the body itself, the valve may need replacement.
Expansion relief valve weeping or discharging constantly
This indicates system over-pressurisation, likely due to a faulty expansion vessel or excessively high mains pressure. Address the root cause; do not block the discharge.
No hot water or intermittent hot water supply
This is likely related to the hot water cylinder or its thermostat, not the inlet control valve. Consult the hot water cylinder manual.
Water backing up into the mains supply
The check valve may be faulty or obstructed. Ensure correct installation direction. If issue persists, the check valve function may be compromised.
Pros and Cons
Pros
Simplifies installation by combining multiple components into one unit.
Enhances system safety with integrated pressure reduction, backflow prevention, and over-pressure relief.
Consistent water pressure delivery due to the 'droptight' pressure reducing valve.
Installation flexibility offered by the rotatable discharge connection.
Compact design reduces the need for multiple fittings and potential leak points.
Cons
Exclusively designed for unvented hot water systems; not suitable for vented systems.
Requires understanding of unvented system regulations for correct installation.
The expansion relief valve connection is 15mm, which may require an adapter depending on discharge pipe requirements.
Setup, Compatibility & Care
Setup:
Ensure the main water supply is turned off before commencing installation.
Install the Multibloc Valve on the cold water supply line feeding the unvented hot water cylinder. Ensure correct flow direction as indicated on the valve.
Connect the 22mm inlet and outlet ports to the appropriate pipework.
Connect the discharge pipe to the 15mm outlet of the expansion relief valve, ensuring it is directed to a safe discharge point in accordance with local regulations.
Connect the balanced cold water take-off as required.
Open the main water supply slowly and check for leaks at all connections.
Check the pressure reducing valve setting (if adjustable and required) and test the expansion relief valve.
Compatibility:
Designed for use on unvented hot water systems only.
Suitable for mains cold water supplies.
Maximum working pressure: 16.0 bar.
Maximum water temperature: 45°C.
Connections: 22mm for inlet/outlet, 15mm for PRV discharge.
Care:
Regularly inspect the valve for any signs of damage or leaks.
Periodically check the operation of the expansion relief valve (refer to manufacturer guidelines or a qualified installer).
The integral strainer should be checked and cleaned as part of routine system maintenance, particularly in areas with hard water or sediment.
Avoid aggressive cleaning agents; a damp cloth is sufficient for external cleaning.
