Can these be used for vertical joints?

Yes, the set includes a movable insert specifically designed to allow for both vertical and horizontal grouting.

How should I clean the wooden handles?

Wipe the handles with a damp cloth and dry them immediately. Avoid submerging them in water.

Troubleshooting

Mortar sticking to the blade

Ensure the blade is clean and slightly dampen the stainless steel surface before applying mortar.

Handle feeling loose

Check the connection point and ensure the tang is securely seated; if the wood has dried out significantly, a light oil treatment may help restore the fit.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Versatile range of sizes for any joint width
Comfortable wooden handle improves control
Supports both horizontal and vertical masonry applications

Cons

Wooden handles require care to avoid rot
Higher weight compared to plastic alternatives
Requires manual cleaning to maintain the finish

Setup, Compatibility & Care

To begin, ensure you have selected the correct trowel size for your specific mortar gap. The tools are compatible with most standard mortar mixes used in bricklaying and tiling. Maintenance is critical for tool longevity: after each use, wipe the stainless steel blades clean with water to prevent mortar buildup. Because the handles are made of beechwood, avoid soaking the tools in water; instead, dry them thoroughly with a clean cloth before storage to prevent the wood from swelling or cracking. Applying a light coat of food-grade oil to the wooden handle once a month can help maintain its integrity.
