Spectacular addition to any perennial or cottage garden borders, the Hollyhock ‘Chater’s Double Ic...Spectacular addition to any perennial or cottage garden borders, the Hollyhock ‘Chater’s Double Icicle’ boasts graceful, tall stems and large double blooms that are Crystal White in colour. This classic cottage Hollyhock flowers throughout the summer and into autumn, and looks stunning when grown in groups. Sow seeds in February to March or September to October onto the surface of a good, free-draining, damp seed compost. Cover with a very fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Place in a propagator or seal container inside a polythene bag at a temperature of 15-20°C (59-68°F) until germination, which usually takes 14-21 days. Light aids germination. Alternatively, sow in late summer in a cool greenhouse and overwinter plants in cool, well-lit conditions, planting out the following spring for larger plants. This method is recommended for heavy or poorly drained soil. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle into trays or 7.5cm (3in) pots. Gradually acclimatise plants to cooler conditions for a few weeks before planting out after all risk of frost, 45cm (18in) apart. Position: Full sun. Height: Up to 180cm when fully established. Spread: Up to 60cm when fully established. Supplied as 1 packet of 100 hollyhock seeds. Images are for guidance only; actual results may vary due to growing conditions and seasonality.

FAQs
How many seeds come in a packet?
This packet contains 100 seeds.
How tall do these hollyhocks grow?
When fully established, they can reach a height of up to 180cm.
Can I grow these in pots?
While they are primarily meant for garden borders, they can be started in 7.5cm pots for transplanting. Long-term, they require significant root space.
Do I need to cover the seeds when sowing?
Yes, but only with a very fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite, as the seeds require light to germinate.
What is the best soil type for these plants?
They thrive in fertile, free-draining soil. If your soil is heavy or poorly drained, start them in a greenhouse over winter first.
Troubleshooting
Seeds failing to germinate
Ensure they are receiving enough light and that the temperature stays consistently between 15-20°C.
Plants leaning or falling over
The plants have reached their maximum height and require staking for structural support.
Stunted growth in heavy soil
Hollyhocks prefer free-draining soil. Consider moving the plants to a raised bed or starting them in pots first to improve drainage conditions.

Setup, Compatibility & Care
Sowing: Surface sow seeds in February–March or September–October onto damp, free-draining compost. Light is essential for germination, so cover only with a very fine layer of compost or vermiculite.
Germination: Keep in a propagator or sealed bag at 15-20°C (59-68°F). Expect seedlings to emerge in 14-21 days.
Transplanting: Move seedlings into 7.5cm (3in) pots once they are large enough to handle. Acclimatise them gradually to outdoor temperatures before planting out after the final risk of frost.
Spacing: Plant at least 45cm (18in) apart to ensure adequate airflow and prevent overcrowding.
Care: Provide full sun exposure. Use staking if the location is windy to protect the tall stems. Maintain soil fertility and keep the area free of weeds.
