Setup, Compatibility & Care
- Siting: Locate the Hogilo within cover, such as under a bush or behind some foliage, out of the prevailing wind. This will help to provide a natural and secure environment.
- Nesting Material: Place cut short lengths of dry grass or leaves inside the Hogilo as nesting material. This will make it more comfortable for the hedgehogs.
- Camouflage: Pile leaves or foliage around the house to further camouflage it.
- Cleaning: Clean if unoccupied after winter use (late March to early April). Use only organic Pyrethrum powders suitable for birds if treatment for fleas is needed. Dog and cat treatments are too strong and may kill a hedgehog.
- Annual Maintenance: Check and maintain the house annually, ideally in early summer. Avoid disturbing the house during winter, as this could disrupt hibernating hedgehogs.
