FAQs
Can I grow Onion Welsh indoors?
Yes, Onion Welsh can be grown indoors in a pot placed on a sunny windowsill. Ensure it receives at least 6 hours of sunlight per day and has good drainage.
How often should I water my Onion Welsh plant?
Water regularly, especially during dry periods, keeping the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out slightly between waterings.
When is the best time to harvest Onion Welsh?
You can harvest the green stems anytime they are long enough. The bulbs are typically ready to harvest in late summer or fall, but can also be used when smaller.
Is Onion Welsh truly a perennial?
Yes, Onion Welsh is a hardy perennial and will regrow each year in suitable climates.
What's the difference between the green stems and the bulbs?
The green stems have a milder, chive-like flavor, ideal for garnishes. The bulbs are more developed and can be cooked for a deeper, though still mild, onion flavor.
Can I eat the flowers?
While the flowers are edible, they are typically used for ornamental purposes. Their flavor is usually not as significant as the stems or bulbs.
Troubleshooting
Yellowing leaves
This can be due to overwatering or poor drainage. Ensure the soil is well-draining and reduce watering frequency. Also, check for adequate sunlight.
Plant not producing much foliage
Ensure the plant is receiving enough sunlight. Consider a light feeding in spring if the soil is depleted.
Pest infestation (e.g., aphids)
Rinse pests off with water or use insecticidal soap. Encourage beneficial insects in your garden.

Setup, Compatibility & Care
To establish your Onion Welsh plant, select a location with full sun to partial shade. Ensure the soil is well-draining. Plant the herb at the same depth it was in its original container. Water thoroughly after planting. For container planting, use a good quality potting mix and ensure the pot has drainage holes.
Care: Water regularly, keeping the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Established plants are drought-tolerant but perform best with consistent moisture. Fertilize lightly in the spring with a balanced fertilizer. As a perennial, it requires minimal winter protection in most climates.
Harvesting: Harvest the green stems by cutting them back to about an inch from the ground. The bulbs can be harvested by gently loosening the soil around them and pulling them up. For continuous harvest, only take what you need and allow the plant to regrow.
