Hyacinth Carnegie is a perfect variety for adding color to your garden, producing clear white blooms. These hyacinths bring an oriental feel to a sheltered spring border with their rising towers of flowers. This variety of hyacinths is heavenly scented and destined for pride of place in your garden year after year, whether planted directly into garden borders or pots for a beautiful display. Grow hyacinths in moist, fertile, well-drained soil in sun or semi-shade. Plant hyacinth bulbs approximately 10cm (4") deep and 8cm (3") apart. For indoor displays, plant them in containers of bulb fiber or potting compost with the bulb tip just visible above the soil. Position them in a cool, well-ventilated, dark location at a maximum temperature of 7°C (44°F) for about 6 weeks. Water bulbs only when necessary to keep the compost moist. When shoots reach 3cm (1"), move containers to a cool, bright indoor position. Water container-grown hyacinths carefully, avoiding over-wetting or drying out the compost. After flowering, indoor displays can be planted outdoors to bloom the following spring. Outdoors hyacinths are virtually maintenance-free. Caution: irritant to skin and eyes, harmful if eaten.
