FAQs
When is the best time to sow these seeds?
Sow between late winter and mid-spring indoors.
Do I need to cover the seeds with soil?
No, Lobelia seeds need light to germinate, so leave them on the surface of the compost.
Can these be grown in full shade?
They prefer full sun to semi-shade; they will not perform well in deep, full shade.
Are these plants safe for pets and children?
Caution is advised as Lobelia is an irritant to skin and eyes if handled.
How far apart should I plant the seedlings?
Plant them at a distance of 10cm (4 inches) apart for best results.
Troubleshooting
Seeds failing to germinate
Ensure they have not been covered by soil; light is necessary for germination. Verify the temperature is within the 18-24C range.
Plants wilting quickly
Lobelia requires consistent moisture. Increase watering frequency during hot days and ensure the container is not drying out.
Plant looks leggy with few flowers
Trim the plant back to encourage bushy growth and apply a balanced liquid fertilizer to support continued blooming.

Setup, Compatibility & Care
- Sowing: Sow seeds from late winter to mid-spring on the surface of quality seed compost. Do not bury the seeds, as they require light to germinate.
- Germination: Keep in a propagator between 18-24C (65-75F) or seal in a plastic bag. Keep the medium damp but not waterlogged. Germination typically occurs in 14-21 days.
- Transplanting: Move seedlings to cooler conditions once large enough to handle.
- Acclimatization: Gradually introduce plants to outdoor conditions over a 7-10 day period once all risk of frost has passed.
- Planting Out: Transplant into moist, fertile, and well-drained soil. Maintain a spacing of 10cm between plants.
- Care: Water and feed regularly throughout the summer. Always wear gloves when handling due to the plant's irritant nature.
