Setup, Compatibility & Care
To ensure success, plant your bulbs in autumn at a depth of approximately 6 to 8 inches in soil that is rich in organic matter. Compatibility is highest in garden beds that offer excellent drainage, as the bulbs are susceptible to rotting in waterlogged clay. When planting, position the bulb on its side; this simple technique prevents water from collecting in the hollow crown and causing rot. During the growing season, apply a light balanced fertilizer in early spring as new shoots emerge. After flowering, remove the spent flower heads but allow the foliage to yellow and wither completely before removal to ensure the bulb develops the strength necessary for the next year.
