The You Garden Echium Candicans, commonly known as Pride of Madeira, is an ideal choice for gardeners looking to create architectural interest in sunny borders or large containers. It offers the key benefit of dramatic, indigo-colored floral spikes that serve as a magnet for bees and butterflies, though potential owners should note its requirement for protection against severe frost and harsh winter winds.

As an established plant, it arrives at 40-70cm, but it can grow significantly taller once it produces its iconic flower spikes in the summer.
Yes, it thrives in large containers, provided they have excellent drainage and the plant is protected from extreme winter weather.
Yes, it is hardy down to -5°C, but it is highly recommended to provide extra protection or shelter during colder spells to ensure survival.
The best time to plant is in the spring after the risk of heavy frost has passed, allowing the plant to establish its root system before winter.
Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can lead to soft growth that is more susceptible to cold damage. A general-purpose slow-release fertilizer in early spring is usually sufficient.
Check soil moisture levels; while the plant likes good drainage, it should not be allowed to dry out completely during active growth.
Ensure the plant is receiving at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day, as shade will inhibit flower spike development.
Check for signs of wind burn or frost damage; prune away damaged leaves in spring to encourage fresh, healthy growth.
When your plant arrives in its 2L pot, ensure you transplant it into a permanent location with full sun exposure. If the ground is heavy clay, add grit or sand to the planting hole to improve drainage. While the plant is hardy to -5°C, use horticultural fleece to cover the foliage during particularly cold snaps or during periods of biting wind. Regular watering is essential during the first season of growth, but allow the top layer of soil to dry out between waterings to ensure the roots remain healthy. If you live in an area prone to harsh winters, planting in a container allows you to move the specimen into a greenhouse or shed during the coldest months.
