Setup, Compatibility & Care Instructions
Planting:
Choose a location that receives partial shade. Ensure the soil is well-drained; amend heavy clay soils with compost or grit to improve drainage. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and just as deep. Place the plant in the hole so the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface. Backfill with soil and water thoroughly.
Compatibility:
Phormium Gold Sword pairs well with plants that appreciate similar conditions, such as heathers, ornamental grasses, and succulents. It is also an excellent companion for taller shrubs or smaller flowering perennials that benefit from its bold foliage contrast.
Care:
Water regularly during the first growing season to establish the plant. Once mature, it is drought tolerant and requires minimal watering, only during prolonged dry spells. Fertilize sparingly in spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer if desired, but it is not essential for most healthy plants. Pruning is generally limited to removing any dead, damaged, or unsightly leaves at the base of the plant. Avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot.
