FAQs

How often should I water my Sempervivums?

Water thoroughly when the soil is dry to the touch. The frequency will depend on environmental factors like sunlight and temperature. Typically, once every 1-2 weeks.

Can Sempervivums survive in winter?

Yes, Sempervivums are cold-hardy and can survive freezing temperatures. Protect them from excessive moisture during winter.

Do Sempervivums need fertilizer?

They generally don't require much fertilizer. If needed, use a diluted succulent fertilizer during the growing season.

How do I propagate Sempervivums?

Sempervivums are easily propagated by removing the 'chicks' (offsets) from the mother plant and planting them in well-draining soil.

What kind of soil is best for Sempervivums?

Use a well-draining soil mix, such as a cactus or succulent potting mix, to prevent root rot.

Can Sempervivums be grown indoors?

Yes, as long as they receive adequate sunlight (at least 6 hours per day). A sunny windowsill is an ideal location.

What are the common pests of Sempervivums?

Common pests include aphids and mealybugs. Inspect plants regularly and treat with insecticidal soap if necessary.

Setup, Compatibility & Care

Planting: Plant Sempervivums in well-draining soil. A cactus or succulent potting mix is ideal.
Light: Place them in a location with plenty of sunlight. They need at least 6 hours of sunlight daily.
Watering: Water thoroughly, but allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings to prevent root rot. Reduce watering in winter.
Temperature: They are cold-hardy and can tolerate a wide range of temperatures.
Fertilizing: Fertilize sparingly, if at all. Too much fertilizer can cause the plants to grow leggy.
Compatibility: Sempervivums are compatible with other succulents and plants that have similar care requirements.
Care: Remove dead leaves regularly. Propagate by removing offsets (chicks) from the mother plant (hen).
