Full details

The Thompson & Morgan Fagus Sylvatica, or Common Beech, is an ideal choice for homeowners and gardeners seeking a versatile, high-density privacy screen or formal hedge that transitions beautifully through the seasons. It offers the unique benefit of retaining its copper-toned dead leaves throughout the winter, ensuring privacy long after deciduous trees have lost their foliage; however, it requires well-drained soil and will not thrive in waterlogged conditions.

FAQs

How many plants do I need for a metre of hedge?

You should plant 4 plants per metre for a standard single-line hedge.

Does Common Beech keep its leaves in winter?

Yes, it is noted for holding its dead leaves throughout the winter, which helps maintain privacy.

Can I grow this in a shady area?

Fagus sylvatica can grow in partial shade, but it performs best in locations with adequate light.

How often should I trim the hedge?

Clipping once or twice a year is sufficient to keep the hedge looking tidy and dense.

What soil conditions are best?

It requires fertile, well-drained soil. It will not tolerate heavy clay or waterlogged ground.

How tall can this beech grow?

In its natural state, it can reach a height of 12m (39'), but it can be kept at almost any height via regular pruning.

Troubleshooting

Leaves turning brown or wilting prematurely

Check soil drainage; beech will suffer in waterlogged conditions which causes root rot.

Hedge is thinning at the bottom

Ensure the top of the hedge is trimmed slightly narrower than the base to allow sunlight to reach the lower branches.

Slow growth after planting

Ensure the plants are in fertile, well-drained soil and are not being crowded by aggressive grass or weed species.

Pros and Cons

Long-term growth requires commitment to annual pruning

Setup, Compatibility & Care

To establish a successful hedge, follow these guidelines for optimal growth:

Soil Preparation: Ensure the planting site is fertile and, most importantly, well-drained. Avoid areas that collect standing water.
Planting Spacing: For a standard single-line hedge, use a spacing of 30cm (12 inches) apart, which equates to 4 plants per metre.
Light Requirements: The Common Beech is flexible and performs well in either full sun or partial shade.
Maintenance Pruning: Clip the hedge once or twice per year—typically in late summer—to maintain its shape and encourage density.
Care: Keep the area around the base clear of competing weeds during the first year of establishment to ensure the root system develops properly.
