FAQs

When is the best time to plant these?

Spring or early autumn is ideal, allowing the roots to settle before the extreme heat of summer or the deep frost of winter.

Does this plant need full sun?

Yes, Verbena bonariensis performs best in a position that receives full sun to produce the most vibrant flowers and strong stems.

Is it hardy throughout the UK?

It is generally hardy, but in colder northern regions or very wet winters, the plant may occasionally struggle. Providing well-drained soil helps significantly.

Can I grow these in containers?

Yes, they can grow in large containers, but ensure the pot has excellent drainage and the plant is kept well-watered during the growing season.

Should I cut them back in autumn?

It is recommended to leave the stems standing through winter to enjoy the skeletal structure and provide winter interest, pruning them back in spring.

Troubleshooting

Plants are leaning over too much

The plants may be in a too-shaded area or exposed to excessive wind. Consider adding a plant support or bamboo cane to keep the stems upright.

Plant is spreading too much via seeds

Deadhead the spent flower heads before they have a chance to drop their seeds if you want to limit natural propagation.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Attracts a wide variety of pollinating insects
Provides elegant vertical interest in borders
High drought tolerance once established
Persistent flowers last long into the winter
Self-seeding nature ensures future plant populations

Cons

Can spread aggressively due to self-seeding
Stems may require staking in very exposed areas
Not reliably evergreen in harsh winter climates

Setup, Compatibility & Care

To ensure your plants thrive, follow these steps:

Preparation: Dig a hole slightly larger than the 9cm pot and mix in some compost if your soil is particularly heavy.
Planting: Carefully remove the plant from its pot and place it at the same depth it was previously growing. Firm the soil around the base.
Watering: Water thoroughly immediately after planting. Continue to provide regular water during the first few weeks until the root system is established.
Compatibility: Best paired with ornamental grasses, Echinacea, and Rudbeckia for a prairie-style garden aesthetic.
Maintenance: Leave the dried flower heads on the plant throughout the winter to provide structural beauty, then prune back to the base in early spring before new growth appears.
