FAQs

How often should I water my Devil's Ivy?

Water when the top 2-3cm of soil feels dry. Always ensure the pot has drainage to prevent waterlogging.

Can this plant survive in a room without windows?

It can survive in low light, but it will grow much slower. It requires at least some ambient light to thrive long-term.

Is this plant safe for pets?

No, Devil's Ivy is toxic if ingested by cats or dogs. Please keep it out of reach of curious pets.

Do I need to fertilize it?

You can apply a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer once a month during the growing season (spring and summer).

What should I do if the plant gets too long?

Simply trim the stems back to your desired length with clean, sharp shears. This will often encourage the plant to become bushier.

Troubleshooting

Yellowing leaves

This is often a sign of overwatering. Ensure the top layer of soil dries out before the next watering session.

Brown, crispy leaf edges

Indicates the plant is too dry or is suffering from low humidity. Increase watering frequency or mist the leaves occasionally.

Stems becoming leggy with large gaps between leaves

The plant is likely searching for more light. Move it to a brighter spot with indirect light.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Extremely easy to care for and forgiving of neglect
Adaptable to a wide range of indoor lighting conditions
Visually striking variegated pattern adds color to any room
Versatile display options including trailing or climbing
Proven reliability with an RHS Award of Garden Merit

Cons

Requires regular pruning to control its 2-meter potential size
Growth rate slows significantly in very low-light environments
Toxic if ingested, requiring careful placement in homes with pets

Setup, Compatibility & Care

When you receive your plant in its 12cm pot, choose a location with indirect sunlight. While it can handle low light, avoid harsh, direct sun as this can scorch the leaves. For maintenance, a routine of watering only when the topsoil is dry prevents root rot, which is the most common issue for this variety. If you decide to repot the plant, use a well-draining potting mix to ensure the root system stays aerated. Regularly dusting the leaves with a damp cloth will keep the stomata clear and help the plant maintain its natural, glossy shine.
