Setup, Compatibility & Care
Sowing: Sow seeds directly outdoors in early spring after the last frost, or indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost. Prepare a well-drained soil enriched with compost. Plant seeds about 2.5 cm (1 inch) deep and 15 cm (6 inches) apart.
Support: As soon as seedlings are established and begin to grow, provide support such as netting, canes, or a trellis. Gently tie stems to the support as they grow taller.
Watering: Water regularly, especially during dry spells, ensuring the soil remains consistently moist but not waterlogged. Avoid overhead watering late in the day to reduce the risk of fungal diseases.
Sunlight: Prefers a sunny position but benefits from some shade during the hottest part of the day in warmer climates.
Deadheading: Regularly remove spent flowers to encourage further blooming and prevent the plant from putting energy into seed production.
Compatibility: Thrives in most garden soils. It's compatible with companion planting for general garden health but avoid planting near legumes.
Care: Protect young seedlings from slugs and snails. Ensure good air circulation around the plants.
