Product Information

Full details

The YouGarden Vitex agnus-castus 'Queen Bee' is an ideal choice for gardeners looking to extend their border interest into the late summer and autumn months. This compact, deciduous shrub is perfect for wildlife enthusiasts and those wanting a pollinator-friendly garden, offering fragrant foliage and elegant lavender spikes that attract bees and butterflies. While it provides excellent late-season color and remains manageable in size, it requires a sunny, sheltered spot to thrive and may be less suitable for heavily shaded, damp garden corners.

FAQs

Is Vitex agnus-castus 'Queen Bee' deer resistant?

While not strictly repellent, it is generally ignored by deer compared to more palatable garden plants due to its aromatic foliage.

Can I grow this in a pot on my patio?

Yes, it is well-suited for large patio containers provided they have adequate drainage holes.

When is the best time to prune this shrub?

Pruning is best done in late winter or early spring before the new growth starts to appear.

Does it need winter protection?

Once established, it is hardy, but young plants may benefit from a layer of mulch around the base during their first winter.

How often should I water the plant?

Water regularly during the first growing season. Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant but may need occasional watering in extreme heat.

Troubleshooting

Plant is failing to produce flowers.

Ensure the plant is receiving at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily.

Leaves are yellowing or dropping prematurely.

Check the soil moisture; ensure the plant is not sitting in waterlogged soil as this can cause root stress.

Shrub is growing lanky or uneven.

Apply a light trim in early spring to stimulate bushier, more compact growth.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Excellent late-season color for borders
High value for wildlife and pollinator gardens
Compact size suitable for patio containers
Fragrant leaves add sensory appeal
Established 2L pot size for immediate planting

Cons

Requires a full-sun position for optimal flowering
Deciduous nature means it loses leaves in winter
Not suitable for heavy shade or waterlogged soil

Setup, Compatibility & Care

When planting, choose a position that receives full sun to ensure maximum flower production. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and mix in organic matter to improve drainage. Water the plant thoroughly after planting and keep it moist during its first growing season until it is fully established. In colder regions, a layer of mulch around the base can help protect the roots during the first winter. Little pruning is required, though you may lightly trim it in late winter or early spring to maintain its desired shape and encourage new growth for the coming season.
