Setup, Compatibility & Care
To ensure your Nandina establishes quickly, plant it in a hole twice the size of the root ball, incorporating well-draining organic matter if your native soil is heavy. It prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil conditions. When planting in containers, use a quality potting mix and ensure the pot has adequate drainage holes to prevent the roots from sitting in stagnant water. Water consistently during the first year until the root system is established, especially during dry spells. Once mature, it is quite drought-tolerant. Minimal pruning is required; simply remove any damaged or dead stems in early spring to encourage fresh, healthy growth.
