Setup, Compatibility & Care
Setup
Motorcycle tyre installation should always be performed by a qualified professional using appropriate tools and safety procedures.
- Remove Old Tyre: Ensure the motorcycle is securely elevated, and the wheel is removed. Deflate and remove the old tyre from the rim.
- Inspect Rim: Thoroughly inspect the rim for any damage, corrosion, or burrs. Clean the rim thoroughly.
- Install New Tyre: Apply appropriate tyre mounting lubricant to the tyre beads and rim edges. Ensure the rotation arrow on the sidewall points in the direction of forward travel. Carefully mount the new tyre onto the rim, taking care not to pinch the inner tube if applicable, or damage the bead in tubeless applications.
- Inflate: Slowly inflate the tyre to the recommended pressure, ensuring both beads seat properly. You may hear distinct 'pops' as the beads seat.
- Balance: Once the tyre is mounted and inflated, balance the wheel to prevent vibrations and uneven wear.
Compatibility
The Continental TKC 70 Rocks is designed for adventure motorcycles. Always refer to your motorcycle's owner's manual for recommended tyre sizes and specifications. This specific model, 150/70 R18 70S TL Rear, indicates:
- 150: Tyre width in millimeters.
- 70: Aspect ratio (height as a percentage of width).
- R: Radial construction.
- 18: Rim diameter in inches.
- 70S: Load and speed index (70 = 335 kg load, S = 180 km/h speed).
- TL: Tubeless.
- Rear: Designed for the rear wheel.
Care
Proper care extends the life and ensures the safety of your tyres.
- Regular Pressure Checks: Check tyre pressure weekly, or before every significant ride, using a reliable gauge. Always refer to your motorcycle manufacturer's recommended pressures (often found in the owner's manual or on a sticker on the swingarm). Incorrect pressure affects handling, wear, and safety.
- Visual Inspection: Before each ride, inspect the tyre tread and sidewalls for cuts, punctures, cracks, or embedded objects. Pay attention to signs of uneven wear.
- Tread Depth: Monitor tread depth regularly. Replace tyres when they reach the minimum legal tread depth or when the wear indicators are flush with the tread surface.
- Cleaning: Keep tyres clean from oil, grease, or chemicals that can degrade rubber. Use mild soap and water if needed.
- Storage: If storing your motorcycle for an extended period, ensure tyres are kept away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and ozone-producing equipment (like electric motors).
