Product Information

Full details

Mylands Honest John 58 is a traditional off-white paint designed for homeowners and decorators looking to achieve a classic, sophisticated finish with warm stone undertones. Ideal for those seeking a heritage aesthetic, it functions effectively as both a primer and undercoat, providing a versatile foundation for interior surfaces. While it offers excellent coverage and a timeless look, users should note that the dead matt finish is highly absorbent, meaning it is best suited for low-traffic areas where scuff resistance is less of a concern than pure color depth.

FAQs

Is this paint suitable for exterior use?

No, Mylands Honest John 58 is formulated specifically for interior use.

Does this paint require a separate primer?

No, it is designed to function as a white primer and undercoat.

Can I use this in a bathroom?

It is not recommended for high-moisture areas like bathrooms or kitchens due to the nature of the dead matt finish.

How do I store leftover paint?

Seal the lid tightly and store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and freezing temperatures.

How many coats should I apply?

For best results, at least two coats are recommended for full coverage and color depth.

Troubleshooting

Paint appears patchy or uneven after the first coat

This is common with highly absorbent surfaces. Ensure a second coat is applied to create a uniform finish.

Visible brush strokes in the dried finish

Thin the paint slightly or use a high-quality synthetic brush, and ensure you are not overworking the paint as it begins to set.

Pros and Cons

Acts as both primer and undercoat to save time
Provides a beautiful, non-reflective flat finish

Not intended for high-traffic or high-moisture environments
Smaller 250ml size may require multiple tins for large projects

Setup, Compatibility & Care

Before application, ensure the substrate is clean, dry, and free of loose debris or oil. Because this product acts as a primer, it can be applied directly to most prepared interior surfaces.

Preparation: Sand glossy surfaces to provide a key, then wipe clean.
Application: Stir well before use. Use a high-quality brush or roller to apply thin, even coats to ensure consistent absorption.
Drying: Allow adequate drying time between coats as specified by ambient temperature and humidity levels.
Maintenance: As a dead matt finish is porous, avoid harsh scrubbers. If cleaning is necessary, use a soft, slightly damp cloth and gentle pressure to avoid burnishing the finish.
