Setup, Compatibility & Care
Sowing Indoors/Outdoors:
Sow seeds from February to June for outdoor cultivation. For indoor growing out of season, sow throughout the year.
Compost & Germination:
Use a free-draining seed compost. Sow seeds on the surface and cover lightly with compost or vermiculite. Place in a propagator or seal the container in a polythene bag at a temperature of 15-25°C (59-77°F).
Germination Time:
Germination typically takes 14-21 days.
Watering:
Keep the compost slightly moist but not waterlogged. Water very lightly as seedlings emerge.
Transplanting:
Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into 7.5cm (3in) pots.
Growing Conditions:
Grow on in cooler conditions after transplanting. Basil requires a position in Full Sun to thrive.
Hardiness:
This is a Half-Hardy Annual. Protect from frost.
Mature Size:
Reaches up to 45cm (18in) in height and 30cm (12in) in spread.
