Setup, Compatibility & Care
Compatibility:
This pulley set is specifically designed for the Shimano Deore RD-M6000 rear derailleur. Ensure your derailleur model matches before purchasing. It is typically suitable for SGS (long cage) models, but always verify based on your specific derailleur.
Setup:
- Remove Rear Wheel: For easier access, remove the rear wheel from the bicycle.
- Shift to Smallest Cog: Shift the chain to the smallest cog on the rear cassette.
- Remove Old Pulleys: Locate the two bolts securing the old tension and guide pulleys to the derailleur cage. Use an appropriate Allen key (commonly 5mm) to unscrew and remove them. Note the position of the upper (guide) and lower (tension) pulley.
- Install New Pulleys: Install the new Shimano guide pulley (usually marked with an arrow indicating chain direction) and tension pulley in their respective positions. Ensure they spin freely after tightening the bolts. The bolts should be snug but not overtightened, as this can damage the derailleur.
- Reinstall Rear Wheel: Mount the rear wheel back onto the bicycle.
- Check Shifting: Shift through all gears to confirm proper function. Minor adjustments to the B-tension screw or limit screws may be necessary.
Care:
- Cleaning: Periodically clean the pulley teeth with a brush and degreaser to remove accumulated dirt and grime. This prevents grit from interfering with chain movement and causing premature wear.
- Lubrication: The sealed bearings in the tension pulley are designed for low maintenance. Avoid excessive lubrication on the pulley teeth, as this can attract dirt. Clean and inspect regularly.
- Inspection: Check for any signs of wear, such as worn teeth or play in the bearings, during routine maintenance.
