Plant them in the spring, once the ground has warmed up and the risk of frost has passed.
Yes, they perform very well in patio pots provided the container has good drainage.
Generally, plant bulbs at a depth of approximately 5-8cm, depending on the specific soil texture.
In milder climates, they can stay in the ground with a deep mulch; in very cold regions, it is safer to lift and store them.
While Ixia are generally not a primary target for deer, they are not strictly classified as deer-proof.
Deadheading can help the plant focus energy on bulb development for the following year, though it is not strictly necessary for the health of the bulb.
Ensure the soil temperature has risen sufficiently and that the bulbs were not planted during a late frost.
Check soil drainage; Ixia bulbs require well-draining soil and will struggle or rot in waterlogged or heavy clay conditions.
Rodents may have unearthed them. Use protective mesh or store bulbs in secure, rodent-proof containers until planting.
For successful growth, plant your corms in the spring, specifically after all danger of frost has passed. Choose a location with fertile, well-drained soil in a sunny or light-shaded area. If planting in pots, ensure your container has adequate drainage holes. During the growing season, keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. If you live in an area with particularly cold winters, apply a deep layer of mulch over the planting site in autumn to insulate the bulbs. If you aren't planting immediately upon arrival, store the bulbs in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated space, ensuring they are kept in a container that is inaccessible to rodents.
