FAQs

What is the best stitch to use with this elastic?

A zigzag stitch or a stretch stitch is recommended for the best results. These stitches allow for the elasticity of the fabric to move.

Can I use this elastic for other applications?

While designed for swimwear and babywear, you can use it for any project requiring stretch and shape retention, like lingerie or athletic wear, provided the 9mm width is suitable.

How do I prevent the elastic from rolling or twisting?

Pin the elastic carefully to the fabric, stretching it evenly. Use a stretch stitch to help secure the elastic to the fabric.

How do I store the elastic?

Store the elastic in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

What kind of needle should I use?

A universal or stretch needle is ideal.

How much stretch should I apply when sewing?

Gently stretch the elastic so that the elastic matches the length of the fabric. The amount of stretch will depend on the fabric and desired fit.

Troubleshooting

Elastic stretches out after washing.

Ensure you are using a proper stretch stitch and stretching the elastic slightly while sewing. Make sure you are washing and drying the garment according to care instructions.

Elastic breaks or snaps during sewing.

Check your needle and thread; use a stretch needle and quality thread. Reduce machine speed and gently feed the fabric through. Avoid pulling the elastic too much.

Setup, Compatibility & Care

Setup

Preparation: Cut the Hemline Swimwear Clear Elastic to the required length, allowing a little extra for seam allowance.
Application: Use a sewing machine with a stretch stitch or a zigzag stitch for optimal results. If using a standard straight stitch, you might need to adjust tension.
Stretching: Gently stretch the elastic as you sew it to the fabric to achieve the desired fit and ensure the garment retains its shape.

Compatibility

Fabrics: Ideal for use with swimwear fabrics, babywear fabrics, and other stretch fabrics. Ensure the fabric is compatible with the sewing machine settings.
Needles: Use a universal or stretch needle for sewing. The needle should be suitable for the weight of the fabric and elastic.

Care

Washing: Wash garments with clear elastic in cold water with mild detergent. Avoid harsh chemicals or bleach.
Drying: Air dry the garment or use a low heat setting in the dryer. Excessive heat can damage the elastic and reduce its elasticity.
Ironing: Avoid ironing directly on the elastic. If necessary, use a low heat setting and a pressing cloth.
