Setup, Compatibility & Care
Preparation:
Before cutting, it is recommended to pre-wash the fabric. Wash it on a gentle cycle with cold water and tumble dry on low heat or lay flat to dry. This accounts for any potential shrinkage.
Cutting:
Use sharp fabric scissors or a rotary cutter. Be mindful that jersey knits can curl at the edges; you may want to pin the fabric to your cutting mat or weigh it down. Consider cutting on a single layer to avoid shifting.
Sewing:
- Needles: Use a ballpoint or jersey needle (size 70/10 or 80/12) to prevent snagging the fabric fibers.
- Stitch: A serger/overlocker is ideal for a professional finish. On a conventional machine, use a narrow zigzag stitch or a stretch stitch to allow the seams to move with the fabric.
- Thread: All-purpose polyester thread is suitable.
- Presser Foot: A walking foot or even-feed foot can help manage the fabric feed, preventing stretching. You can also use a microtex needle for a clean stitch.
Care:
- Washing: Machine wash cold with like colors on a gentle cycle.
- Drying: Tumble dry on low heat or hang to dry for best results and to minimize potential shrinkage.
- Ironing: Use a low to medium heat setting, preferably with a press cloth, as excessive heat can damage the elastane fibers.
