Setup, Compatibility & Care
Proper handling and maintenance will ensure the longevity and performance of your Metsä Wood timber.
Setup and Installation
- Preparation: Before cutting, allow the timber to acclimate to the environment where it will be used for a few days. This helps minimize movement after installation.
- Measure Accurately: Use a tape measure and a reliable square to mark your cutting lines precisely. Double-check all measurements before cutting.
- Cut Safely: Always use appropriate personal protective equipment, including safety glasses. Secure the timber firmly with clamps before making any cuts to ensure stability and accuracy.
- Join and Assemble: When joining pieces, apply wood glue to contact surfaces for added strength. Use clamps to hold pieces together while fasteners are installed and glue cures. Ensure all angles are square and levels are true during assembly.
Compatibility
- Fasteners: Compatible with standard wood screws, nails, and staples. For outdoor projects, use galvanized or stainless steel fasteners to prevent rust.
- Adhesives: Works well with most wood glues, including PVA wood glue, polyurethane glue, and epoxy.
- Finishes: This timber readily accepts a wide range of finishes, including interior/exterior paints, wood stains, varnishes, oils, and wood preservatives. For best results, always test finishes on a scrap piece first.
Care and Maintenance
- Storage: Store any unused timber flat, off the ground, and in a dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature fluctuations. This prevents warping, twisting, and moisture damage.
- Cleaning: For finished indoor projects, dust regularly with a soft cloth. For occasional cleaning, a damp cloth with mild soap is sufficient. Avoid abrasive cleaners.
- Outdoor Treatment: If used outdoors, regular inspection (annually) and reapplication of appropriate exterior wood preservatives or paints are crucial to protect against weathering, UV degradation, rot, and insects.
