Product Information

Full details

The Exo Terra PTC Self Regulating Heat Mat is designed for reptile, amphibian, and invertebrate keepers who need a reliable, energy-efficient, 24-hour heat source to support their pets' natural thermoregulation. By providing consistent conductive heat, this mat promotes healthy metabolism and digestion; however, users must ensure it is installed correctly on a glass surface to allow for proper thermal gradient creation within the terrarium.

FAQs

Can I use this mat with a thermostat?

While the mat is self-regulating, adding a reptile-specific thermostat is a recommended best practice for absolute temperature control.

Can this be used on a wooden enclosure?

No, this mat is specifically designed for glass terrariums to ensure efficient heat transfer and safety.

Is it safe to leave on for 24 hours?

Yes, it is designed as a 24-hour heat source, provided it is installed on appropriate glass surfaces.

Can I put substrate directly on top of the glass above the mat?

You can, but ensure the substrate layer is thin to prevent excessive insulation, which could trap too much heat.

What should I do if the mat stops working?

Check your power connection and the outlet. If the mat is cold and the connection is sound, verify if the internal safety mechanism has been triggered.

Troubleshooting

The mat does not feel hot to the touch

The PTC technology regulates heat based on ambient conditions; if the air temperature is already warm, the mat may output less heat. Check with an infrared thermometer.

The mat is not sticking to the glass

Ensure the glass surface was thoroughly cleaned with isopropyl alcohol and dried before initial application to remove any oily residue.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Uniform heating prevents surface hotspots
High energy efficiency over 95%
Built-in automatic safety fail-safe
Ideal for 24-hour usage

Cons

Permanent adhesive design limits repositioning
Must be used on glass surfaces only
Does not provide radiant heat like a bulb

Setup, Compatibility & Care

To install, ensure the glass surface of the terrarium is clean, dry, and free of dust. Peel the backing from the heat mat and adhere it firmly to the designated area on the glass. The mat is designed for permanent installation, so choose your location carefully. It is fully compatible with glass terrariums but should not be used on plastic or wooden enclosures. For care, keep the glass surface around the mat clean. Do not submerge the mat in water or use it in high-humidity areas without ensuring the electrical connection remains dry.
