Full details

Part of George Nelson's iconic 1947 Bubble lamp series, the Pear Crisscross pendant light recalls the fruit's shape in a way that makes it look like a sculpted marble vase floating in the air. Featuring elegant, crisscrossing lines that accentuate its curves, this stunning pear-shaped light is made from a steel wire frame coated in an innovative, taut plastic that Nelson discovered after experimenting with surplus military materials post World War II. A product of material ingenuity, it provides an abundant yet diffused light free from glare. Finished with a brushed nickel-plated steel ceiling plate and discreet cord, it can be hung as a contemporary centrepiece or paired with another Bubble pendant for a beautiful sculptural lighting display. Available in two generous sizes to suit any interior, the Pear Crisscross pendant light is a must-have for any contemporary home. Designed by George Nelson. Manufactured by HAY. Part of the Nelson Bubble Lamp series, the Nelson Pear Crisscross Bubble Pendant recalls the fruit’s shape in the way it flares towards the centre. The parallel lines of the lamp’s lightweight steel frame are visible along its surface. The lamp casts a soft, even light. George Nelson designed the Bubble Lamp series in 1952. Born in Connecticut, USA, George Nelson (1908-1986) was one of the most influential figures in the crucial early period of modern design. Trained at Yale as an architect and a fine artist, he believed that a designer’s job was to better the world, using the perfection of nature’s creations as his guide. Two formative years in Rome following his receipt of the prestigious Rome Prize brought him into contact with the world’s leading modernists, including Le Corbusier, Mies Van der Rohe, Walter Gropius, Gio Ponti, and many others, and helped shape his career as a writer and industrial designer, who would change the course of history.
