Pro Plan Veterinary Diets HA Hypoallergenic Dog Food - Purina
The Purina PRO PLAN Veterinary Diet Canine HA Hypoallergenic is a complete hypoallergenic veterina...The Purina PRO PLAN Veterinary Diet Canine HA Hypoallergenic is a complete hypoallergenic veterinary diet for the diagnosis and management of food allergies in dogs of all ages, including puppies. Some dogs may suffer from food allergy, which can cause skin discomfort and/or digestive upsets. The food is a true hypoallergenic diet specially formulated with a single protein source and purified carbohydrate source and, in addition, the protein has been broken down (hydrolysed) into very tiny components that are too small to cause an allergic reaction. Such hydrolysed diets are recognised as the best type of food to use during an 'elimination diet trial' when trying to diagnose (or rule out) food allergy. During such a trial it is important that your dog is fed no other food or treats. PRO PLAN HA is also useful for dogs with severe bowel disease such as IBD as it is particularly highly digestible. Please note that all indications for the Purina PRO PLAN Veterinary Diet are for the dietary support of dogs with the listed conditions and do not preclude appropriate medical management. The veterinary diet should be used under veterinary supervision.

Full details
The Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets HA Hypoallergenic Dry Dog Food is specifically formulated for dogs of all ages, including puppies over 4 months, to diagnose and manage food allergies and intolerances. Its key win is the use of a single hydrolysed protein and purified carbohydrate sources, which are broken down into tiny components to minimize allergic reactions, making it ideal for elimination diet trials and highly digestible for dogs with severe bowel disease like IBD. FAQs
What makes Purina Pro Plan HA Hypoallergenic food different from regular dog food?
This food is specially formulated with a single hydrolysed protein, which means the protein is broken down into very tiny components too small to trigger an allergic reaction. It also uses purified carbohydrate sources to further minimize allergic responses, unlike typical dog foods that contain intact proteins and various ingredients that can cause allergies.
Can puppies eat this food?
Yes, Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets HA Hypoallergenic Dry Dog Food is suitable for dogs of all ages, including puppies aged over 4 months, providing comprehensive nutritional support for their growth and development.
Do I need a prescription from my vet to buy this food?
While it may not always require a direct prescription to purchase, this veterinary diet is intended for use under the supervision and recommendation of a veterinarian. It's crucial to consult your vet to ensure it's the appropriate diet for your dog's specific health condition.
How long should my dog stay on this diet?
The duration of feeding depends on your dog's specific condition and your veterinarian's recommendation. For elimination diet trials, it's typically fed for 8-12 weeks. For long-term management of confirmed allergies or IBD, it may be a lifelong diet. Always follow your vet's guidance.
Can I give my dog treats or other food while they are on this diet?
During an elimination diet trial, it is critically important that your dog eats *only* this food and nothing else, including treats, table scraps, or even flavored medications. Introducing other foods can compromise the trial and make diagnosis difficult. For long-term management, consult your vet about suitable, limited treats.
What is an 'elimination diet trial'?
An elimination diet trial is a diagnostic process where a dog is fed a novel or hydrolysed protein diet (like HA Hypoallergenic) as the *only* food source for several weeks. If the dog's allergy symptoms resolve, it strongly suggests a food allergy. After the trial, specific ingredients may be reintroduced to identify the exact allergen.
Troubleshooting
Dog refuses to eat the food.
Ensure a gradual transition if switching from another food. Try hand-feeding a few pieces. If refusal persists, consult your veterinarian, as some dogs may be finicky or have underlying health issues.
Allergy symptoms (e.g., itching, diarrhea) persist or worsen.
Verify that your dog is not consuming any other foods, treats, or flavored medications, especially during an elimination diet trial. Re-evaluate with your veterinarian; other allergens or medical conditions might be present.
Dog experiences initial digestive upset (e.g., loose stools, gas) after starting the food.
This can sometimes occur during a dietary change. Ensure the transition was slow enough (7-10 days). If symptoms are severe or persist beyond a few days, contact your veterinarian.
Unsure about portion sizes.
Always refer to the feeding guide on the packaging or, preferably, follow specific feeding recommendations provided by your veterinarian based on your dog's individual needs and activity level.
