FAQs
What size trailer are these mudguards suitable for?
The 8" mudguards are generally suitable for standard utility trailers, small car trailers, or specific applications on larger trailers where an 8" width is appropriate. Their suitability depends on the wheel size and the desired coverage. The offset fit makes them versatile for various chassis designs.
Do the brackets come with mounting hardware?
No, the listing includes two mudguards and four brackets. Mounting hardware (bolts, nuts, washers) for attaching the brackets to the trailer frame and the mudguards to the brackets are not included and must be sourced separately.
Can these mudguards be painted?
Yes, the galvanized steel can be painted. Ensure the surface is clean and properly prepared (e.g., light sanding, primer suitable for galvanized surfaces) before applying paint for best adhesion and finish.
How do I attach the mudguards to the brackets?
The mudguards have a flat flange on the rear for mounting. You will use appropriate bolts, nuts, and washers (not included) to fasten this flange to the pre-drilled holes on the angle brackets.
What is the main advantage of the offset fit?
The offset fit means the mudguards are mounted away from the side of the trailer, providing extra clearance. This is particularly useful for tandem axle setups, preventing mud build-up between axles, or for trailers carrying wide loads.
Are these mudguards suitable for commercial use?
The heavy-duty galvanized steel construction suggests good durability for commercial applications. However, it is essential to ensure they meet any specific regulatory requirements for commercial vehicle mudguards in your region.
Troubleshooting
Mudguard rattles or vibrates excessively
Ensure all bracket mounting bolts and mudguard attachment bolts are securely tightened. Check that the mudguard is not contacting any part of the trailer frame.
Brackets do not align with existing trailer holes
These brackets are designed for custom mounting. You will likely need to drill new pilot holes in your trailer frame to match the bracket's mounting hole pattern. Use the elongated holes on the bracket for fine adjustment.
Mudguard appears to be sagging
Verify that the heavy-duty brackets are securely fastened and that the mudguard is properly attached to the brackets. Ensure the correct number of brackets (at least two per mudguard) are used for adequate support.
Rust spots appearing on galvanized surface
Small rust spots can occur if the zinc coating is scratched. Clean the area and apply a zinc-rich paint or cold galvanizing spray to protect the underlying steel.
Pros and Cons
Pros
Durable galvanized steel construction for longevity.
Offset design offers better clearance and protection.
Heavy-duty brackets provide strong support.
Suitable for custom trailer builds and repairs.
Includes all necessary components (mudguards and brackets).
Cons
Requires user to determine optimal bracket placement.
Brackets may require additional drilling for some trailer types.
Galvanized finish may vary slightly in appearance.
Not suitable for trailers where mudguards must fit flush against the side.
Setup, Compatibility & Care
Setup:
Determine the desired position for your mudguards, considering wheel clearance and trailer width.
Identify the best locations on your trailer frame to attach the angle brackets. You may need to drill new holes in your trailer frame.
Securely fasten the four angle brackets to the trailer frame using appropriate bolts, nuts, and washers (not included).
Align the mudguards with the mounting flange on the brackets and attach them using suitable hardware (not included). Ensure the mudguards are evenly spaced and level.
Compatibility:
The mudguards are designed to fit the AB Tools 8" Metal Mudguard system.
The brackets are intended for use with mudguards that require an offset fit, meaning they mount away from the trailer's side.
Compatible with most trailer chassis designs, but requires user assessment for precise mounting point determination.
Care:
Clean mudguards and brackets periodically with water and a mild detergent. Avoid abrasive cleaners that could damage the galvanized finish.
Periodically check mounting hardware for tightness and re-secure as needed.
Inspect the galvanized coating for any damage and consider protective coatings if necessary for harsh environments.
