Setup, Compatibility & Care
Sowing Seeds:
Sow seeds from late winter to early spring. Plant them 1.5mm (1/16 in) deep in John Innes Seed Compost. Ensure the compost is moist but not waterlogged. Seal the sown tray or pot in a polythene bag until germination occurs.
Germination:
Germination typically takes 15-21 days at a consistent temperature of 21°C (70°F).
Transplanting:
Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into 7.5cm (3 in) pots. Grow them in cool conditions.
Planting Out:
Plant the young plants out into their final positions 60cm (24in) apart. Choose a location with sun or semi-shade. The soil should be ordinary, but not overly rich. Provide some shelter from strong winds.
Care:
Water regularly during dry periods, especially when the plant is establishing. Deadheading spent flowers can encourage further blooming. As a hardy perennial, it should overwinter well in most climates with minimal protection. Remove any dead foliage in late autumn or early spring.
Compatibility:
This plant is suitable for mixed borders, cottage gardens, wildlife gardens, and large containers (if provided with adequate support and drainage). Avoid planting where pets or small children might ingest the plant, due to its harmful nature when eaten.
