Full details
This Cottam Synthetic Sash Brush Set is designed for painters seeking precision and a professional finish, particularly on detailed work like trim, mouldings, and profiles. Its key benefit is the superior control offered by the round head profile, enabling clean lines and sharp corners. A potential caveat is that the synthetic bristles, while versatile, may require a slight adjustment period for those accustomed to natural bristles for certain paint types.

FAQs
What is the main advantage of a sash brush over a standard paintbrush?
A sash brush, with its typically round head and finer bristles, offers significantly more precision and control, making it ideal for detailed work like cutting in edges, painting trim, and reaching into corners where a flat brush might be too broad or unwieldy.
Can I use these synthetic brushes for varnishing?
Yes, these synthetic brushes are suitable for varnishing, particularly with water-based varnishes. The fine, tapered filaments help to achieve a smooth, even finish with minimal brush marks. For oil-based varnishes, ensure thorough cleaning with the appropriate solvent.
How long should these brushes last?
With proper care and cleaning after each use, these brushes are designed for durability and can last for a considerable time, depending on the frequency and type of use. Regular cleaning and proper storage are key to maximizing their lifespan.
What is the benefit of the waxed wooden handle?
The waxed wooden handle provides a comfortable, non-slip grip that is less prone to swelling or cracking compared to unvarnished wood. It also allows the brush to be easily spun during painting, which helps in loading the brush with paint and maintaining consistent paint application.
Are synthetic brushes better than natural bristles for all paint types?
Synthetic brushes, like these, excel with water-based paints due to their non-swelling properties, offering excellent smooth finishes. They also perform well with oil-based paints. Natural bristles traditionally held more paint and were preferred for oil-based paints, but modern synthetics offer comparable performance for many applications and are often more durable and easier to clean.
What does 'tapered and flagged' mean for the bristles?
'Tapered' means the ends of the bristles are thinned down, allowing for a finer tip. 'Flagged' refers to the splitting of the very ends of the bristles, which creates more surface area to hold and release paint smoothly, contributing to a fine, even finish and preventing drips or heavy lines.
Troubleshooting
Bristles are splaying or losing shape.
Ensure the brush is being used with appropriate paint types for synthetic bristles. Clean the brush thoroughly after each use and reshape the bristles before storing. Avoid storing the brush with the bristles bent or compressed.
Paint is not applying smoothly, leaving streaks.
Check if the brush is overloaded with paint. Ensure bristles are clean and properly conditioned. For water-based paints, ensure the brush is clean and free from residual oil-based paint. Try a lighter pressure stroke.
Ferrule is coming loose from the handle.
This is rare, but if it occurs, contact the retailer or manufacturer. Ensure the ferrule is not subjected to excessive force or prying.
Brush is difficult to clean.
For oil-based paints, ensure you are using the correct solvent. For stubborn water-based paints, try a dedicated brush cleaner. Clean the brush immediately after use for easier cleaning.

Setup, Compatibility & Care
Setup: The brushes are ready for use straight out of the packaging. For best results, especially with new brushes, gently flex the bristles to remove any loose filaments. Ensure the brush is clean and dry before its first use.
Compatibility: These synthetic brushes are highly compatible with a wide range of paint types, including:
- Water-based paints (emulsions, acrylics)
- Oil-based paints (enamels, glosses)
The stainless-steel ferrule is also compatible with standard trade paint brush holding systems.
Care: Proper cleaning is essential for longevity:
- Water-based paints: Immediately after use, rinse the brush thoroughly under warm running water, working the paint out of the bristles. Use a mild soap or brush cleaner if necessary. Rinse until water runs clear.
- Oil-based paints: Use a suitable solvent (e.g., mineral spirits, turpentine) to clean the brush. Work the solvent through the bristles to dissolve the paint. Rinse with solvent, then wash with soap and water. Ensure all solvent is removed.
After cleaning, shake off excess water or solvent. Reshape the bristles to their original form and store the brushes bristle-up in a suitable holder or hang them to dry. Avoid storing them submerged in liquid or with bristles pressed down.
