This guide is for anglers looking to improve their fly fishing success, particularly when targeting large trout in clear water. The Fulling Mill Olive Lead Stalking Bug is designed to sink rapidly and entice strikes with its marabou tail. A key consideration is the need for appropriate fly fishing gear and techniques for effective use.

Use a tippet size appropriate for the clarity of the water and the size of the trout you are targeting. Generally, 3X to 5X tippet is suitable.
While designed for clear water, it can be effective in slightly murky conditions, but other patterns might be more suitable.
After use, gently rinse the fly and allow it to air dry. If the tail becomes matted, gently tease it apart with your fingers.
Cast upstream or across, allowing the fly to sink naturally. Retrieve with short strips and be ready to set the hook.
Replace the fly when the hook becomes dull, or the materials are damaged beyond repair.
While designed for trout, it may attract other fish species depending on the water conditions and the presence of baitfish.
Ensure the fly is properly wetted before casting. Check the fly for any damage that might affect its ability to sink. Use a sinking fly line.
Adjust your retrieve speed and technique. Try different presentation angles. Check for weed or debris that may be affecting your presentation. Change to a different fly.
Use this fly with appropriate fly fishing gear. A 4-6 weight fly rod with a matching weight forward floating or sinking tip line is recommended. Attach the fly using a reliable knot such as a clinch knot or a loop knot. After each use, rinse the fly with fresh water to remove any debris and prevent corrosion. Store the fly in a fly box to protect it from damage and keep the hook sharp. Inspect the hook point before each use.
