Setup, Compatibility & Care
Setup:
For container planting, use a pot with good drainage and fill with a quality potting mix. Place the plant in its new pot, ensuring it's at a similar depth as it was in its nursery container. If planting in the ground, choose a location that receives adequate sunlight and consider using a root barrier to manage its spread. Water thoroughly after planting.
Compatibility:
Spearmint is highly compatible with other herbs and flowering plants in mixed borders or containers, provided they have similar watering needs. It pairs well with low-growing flowers that benefit from bee activity. Avoid planting near shallow-rooted vegetables that might compete for water and nutrients.
Care:
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but avoid waterlogging. Water at the base of the plant when the top inch of soil feels dry. Avoid overhead watering, which can promote fungal issues.
- Feeding: Feed sparingly during the growing season (spring and summer) once a month with a balanced slow-release fertilizer or a top dressing of organic compost.
- Pruning: Trim back any leggy growth to encourage bushier development. Remove spent flower spikes to promote further blooming.
- Overwintering: In colder climates, mulch the base of the plant or protect containers from hard frost. In very cold regions, consider bringing potted plants into a sheltered location.
