Product Information

Full details

The Tiffen Black Pro-Mist 1 Circular Polarising Filter is designed for photographers and cinematographers who want to achieve a dreamy, cinematic look while maintaining technical control over light reflections. By combining Tiffen's signature Black Pro-Mist diffusion with a high-quality circular polariser, this tool effectively softens highlights and smooths skin tones while simultaneously deepening colors and removing glare. While it offers unparalleled creative flexibility in a single glass element, users should be aware that the strong diffusion effect is permanent in-camera and requires precise exposure management to avoid over-softening the image.

FAQs

Can I use this filter with a lens hood?

Yes, but reaching the rotating polariser ring may be difficult with deep lens hoods. A petal-style or screw-in hood that allows access to the filter is recommended.

Does the filter affect autofocus?

No, the filter does not interfere with the internal autofocus mechanisms of modern lenses.

What is the primary difference between Black Pro-Mist 1 and other densities?

The '1' indicates a stronger level of diffusion. Lower numbers like 1/4 or 1/8 provide a more subtle softening effect.

Is this filter compatible with all cameras?

It is compatible with any lens featuring the matching thread size (82mm in this model), regardless of camera brand.

Will this filter affect the light transmission of my lens?

As with any polariser, you will lose approximately 1 to 2 stops of light; you may need to adjust your ISO or shutter speed to compensate.

Troubleshooting

Visible vignetting at the edges of the frame

Ensure you are not using an excessively wide lens that physically exceeds the filter's profile, or remove other stacked filters.

The image looks too soft or blurry

The Black Pro-Mist 1 is a strong diffusion filter; ensure your focus is sharp and try closing your aperture slightly to regain some perceived contrast.

Polarising effect does not seem to change

Rotate the outer ring of the filter slowly until you see the reflections disappear or the colors darken in your viewfinder.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Dual-function design saves space and reduces the need for stacking filters
Creates a unique, high-end cinematic atmosphere directly in-camera
Effectively removes distracting reflections from windows and water
High build quality ensures long-term reliability in various environments

Cons

The strong diffusion effect is fixed and cannot be removed in post-production
Combining two filters in one frame may lead to slight vignetting on ultra-wide lenses
Requires manual adjustment of the polariser, which can be tricky with some lens hoods

Setup, Compatibility & Care

To install, screw the filter onto the front element of your lens until secure, ensuring you do not overtighten it. Since this includes a circular polariser, you must rotate the front ring of the filter to achieve the desired level of polarization while looking through your viewfinder or monitor.

Care Instructions:

Always store the filter in a protective, padded case when not in use.
Use a clean microfibre cloth to remove dust or fingerprints.
Avoid using harsh chemical cleaners; use dedicated optical cleaning fluid if necessary.
Ensure the filter is threaded correctly before tightening to avoid cross-threading on your lens.
