Full details

The Think Tank Photo DarkLight Backpack 14L Black is a durable, modular tactical camera backpack designed for photographers navigating urban and outdoor environments. Its key benefit lies in its expandable carrying capacity through MOLLE panels and tactical webbing, allowing for secure attachment of additional pouches and gear. A potential caveat is its 14L capacity, which may be limiting for photographers carrying extensive equipment. Key features include back-panel access, modular pouch compatibility, a dedicated 8" tablet compartment, and an included rain cover.

FAQs

What is the main advantage of the MOLLE system on this backpack?

The MOLLE system allows you to securely attach additional Think Tank Photo modular pouches, expanding your carrying capacity for items like extra lenses, batteries, water bottles, or tools.

Can I fit a professional DSLR camera with a battery grip?

The backpack is designed to hold a camera with an attached lens, three zoom lenses, and accessories. A camera with a battery grip might fit depending on its size and configuration, but it could impact the capacity for other lenses or accessories.

How do I access my camera gear quickly?

The backpack offers two main access points for your camera gear: a dedicated back-panel access for secure loading/unloading, and a top opening for quick retrieval of items you need frequently.

Is the tablet compartment padded?

Yes, the compartment is designed to hold an 8" tablet and provides protection for the device.

What are the dimensions of the backpack?

The backpack has a 14-liter capacity. Specific external dimensions are not provided in the product details, but it's designed for portability in urban and outdoor settings.

Does it come with any modular pouches?

The backpack itself does not come with modular pouches. These are typically sold separately and are designed to attach to the MOLLE panels and webbing rails.

How durable is the material?

The backpack is constructed with durable materials designed to withstand the demands of both urban commuting and outdoor adventures, offering protection for your gear.

Troubleshooting

Zipper is stiff or difficult to move.

Clean the zipper teeth with a small brush to remove any debris. Apply a small amount of silicone-based zipper lubricant or beeswax to the teeth and work the zipper back and forth.

Straps are uncomfortable or don't stay adjusted.

Ensure all adjustment points are properly threaded through the buckles. Re-adjust the shoulder straps, sternum strap, and waist belt for a balanced load distribution. Make sure you are not overpacking, which can strain the straps.

MOLLE attachments are not secure.

Ensure you are using compatible Think Tank Photo modular pouches or accessories designed for MOLLE systems. Follow the attachment instructions for each specific pouch to ensure a tight and secure fit.

Back panel feels warm or lacks ventilation.

The airmesh harness is designed for ventilation. Ensure clothing is not obstructing the airmesh. For very hot conditions, take breaks and allow the back panel to air out.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Highly modular and customizable with MOLLE panels and webbing.
Secure back-panel access keeps gear protected.
Durable construction suitable for demanding environments.
Comfortable carrying system with airmesh harness.
Includes a rain cover for added weather protection.

Cons

14L capacity may be insufficient for photographers with a large amount of gear.
Tactical appearance might not suit all professional settings.
Reliance on specific Think Tank modular pouches for full expandability.

Setup, Compatibility & Care

Setup:

The backpack is ready to use out of the box. The primary setup involves adjusting the shoulder straps, sternum strap, and waist belt (if applicable) for a comfortable and secure fit. You can immediately start loading gear through the main compartment, top opening, or back-panel access.

Compatibility:

This backpack is designed to be compatible with Think Tank Photo's modular pouches, which attach securely to the laser-cut MOLLE panels and tactical webbing rails. It can accommodate a camera with an attached lens, up to three additional zoom lenses, and various accessories. An 8" tablet fits in its dedicated compartment.

Care Instructions:

Cleaning: Wipe the exterior with a damp cloth. Avoid using harsh detergents or abrasive cleaners.
Storage: Store in a cool, dry place when not in use. Ensure the backpack is completely dry before storing to prevent mold or mildew.
Zippers: Keep zippers clean and lubricated with a silicone-based lubricant if they become stiff.
Rain Cover: Clean the rain cover with a damp cloth and allow it to air dry completely before storing it back in its designated pocket.
